How to Measure the Size of Insoles: A Step-by-Step Guide

Sharing is Caring:

Do you have trouble finding insoles that fit because you don’t know how to measure the size of insoles? Do your feet always end up hurting after a long day of wearing shoes? If so, you’re probably not wearing the right size of insoles. Insoles size is an important measurement to get accurate when buying shoes and shoe insoles.

A good fit can make all the difference in how comfortable and supported your feet feel. It is important to measure the size of insoles accurately because incorrect measurements can lead to discomfort and pain. If you suspect you’re not sure of the correct size of your insoles, don’t worry. This article will guide you on how to measure the size of insoles and give some tips when buying shoes and insoles.

Steps on How to Measure the Size of Insoles Based on Your Foot

  1. Get a piece of paper (bigger than your foot), a pen or pencil, and a ruler or a measuring tape.
  2. Place the paper on the floor (better to tape it so the paper won’t move in case you wiggle).
  3. Put your foot on the paper, ensuring that your heel and toes are touching it.
  4. Trace the outline of your foot onto the paper using a pen or pencil. Make sure to trace around the entire foot, including the heel.
  •  Note: If you are tracing someone else’s foot, ensure they are standing up so their foot is in a natural position. It might be helpful to have them hold onto something for balance. This will ensure that you get an accurate tracing of their foot.
  1. Mark the tip of your big toe and the edge of your heel, and then use a ruler or measuring tape to find the distance between them. This gives you the length of your feet.
  2. Find the width of your foot by marking the widest parts of your forefoot and measuring the distance between them.
  3. Repeat steps 1-5 for each foot.
  4. Record the measurements so that you can reference them later.
  • Length: _____ inches (or cm)
  • Width: _____ inches (or cm)
  1. If your feet are different sizes, use the measurements of your bigger foot to compare to a size chart.

How are Shoe Insoles Sized?

Since most full-length insoles need to be cut before usage, orthotics manufacturers provide full-length insoles to accommodate various shoe sizes. Remember that full-length insoles are designed to fit into footwear with a detachable insole since they would otherwise take up too much room in your shoes if you use them without such footwear. When purchasing full-length insoles, choose a size where you fall comfortably within the range and then cut off any extra material that is unnecessary or that does not suit your shoe. If you are half a size larger than the range (for example, if the range is 8–10 and you are a size 10.5), go up a range and remove the extra material.

The shoe insoles’ size range often matches the shoes that can be worn comfortably with 3/4-length insoles and other insert parts. This is so they can be shortened, which most insoles and inserts with 34 lengths can’t do. Insoles with a length of 34 are made to fit inside shoes that already have a liner (unlike full-length insoles, which replace the liner in a shoe).

Shoe Insoles Size Chart

Now that you know how to measure the size of insoles, it is important to know how to read different sizing charts. There are three common ways sizes are measured: the U.S., European (EU), and United Kingdom (UK) systems.

Here are the comparison tables of foot sizes using these three measurement systems:

How to Pick the Right Insoles

Now that you know how to measure the size of insoles and read different size charts, it is time to pick the insole for your feet.

When choosing insoles, you will also need to reference a size chart. The best way to find insoles that fit well is to measure your feet and then find insoles that are the same length and width as your feet. This way, you can be sure that the insoles will not be too big or too small for your shoes.

Custom shoe insoles are a great option for people who have trouble finding insoles that fit well. With custom shoe insoles, you can choose the length, width, and arch support that you need to make your shoes more comfortable. If you go for custom shoe insoles, you won’t have to know how to measure the size of insoles as they already fit perfectly and are designed based on the impression of your feet.
